Weekend Special – Sunny Greek Isles


It’s a dreary, cloudy Friday but the weather people promise sunshine for the weekend. I’m thinking it’s a great weekend to cook up a taste of the Greek Isles.

Here are a few ideas for a fun cookout with a bit of Greek flair:

To Start:
Kick off your shoes, get a bottle of your favorite dry white wine and relax. No one rushes or eats early in Greece. Munch a few Roasted Almonds and Spicy Olives while you relax in the shade. If you want to get a little fancy, add a few of my Mediterranean Shrimp. They’re good hot or avoid the last minute rush, cook early in the day, refrigerate and then serve at room temperature.

The Main Event:
I love Grilled Lamb. It’s great for a crowd. Serve it medium rare and it will be tender and full of flavor. then again, Keftedes (Greek Meatballs) with Tzatziki (Cucumber Sauce) is a great choice if you want a casual Greek dinner. Form the keftedes into patties (no need to dust with flour) and grill like you would a burger. (The Tzatziki would also be great with the lamb.) Add some Grilled Vegetables, a Greek Salad and a few pieces of pita bread and dinner is done!

Sweet Treats:
For dessert there is only one choice – fresh fruit. Create a beautiful platter of melon, cherries, blueberries and grapes and let everyone help themselves.

Greek Salad
Serves 6

About 1 pint grape or cherry tomatoes (a mix of red, yellow and even purple is nice!), cut in half
1 cucumber, peeled, seeded and chopped
1 scallion, thinly sliced
About 12 Greek or Kalamata olives, pitted and cut in half
4 ounces Feta cheese, crumbled
Red wine vinegar
Extra virgin olive oil
About 1 tablespoon each chopped fresh oregano and flat leaf parsley
Freshly ground pepper to taste

Combine the tomatoes, cucumber, scallion, olives and feta in a large bowl. Drizzle with vinegar and olive oil, sprinkle with herbs and pepper, toss to combine and serve.

    Down in RI with the same gray, cloud cover and thick humidity. Last night we ( company) sauteed fresh scallops with a ginger lime sauce. Yummy and quick with our roasted veggies.

    Tonight it is crab-stuffed sole. I am pretending I am on vacation which I am not yet – but am relaxed and enjoying the cooking.

    • Barb – sounds delightful. It was a mad house in the DR last night – 60 reservations and then 8 no shows…but the Caribbean Black Beans were a big hit. Have a great rest of weekend and see you soon…S.

  2. I’ve been thinking about Greece and delicious Greek food all day today. It must be the weather that has me daydreaming. This sounds amazing. I’m coming to your house for dinner. I’ll bring the wine. 🙂
